Elchin Mammad

Elchin Mammad is a human rights defender and former political prisoner from Azerbaijan. He has been working in the NGO sector since 2000 and successfully engaged in different projects which support the development of civil society. In his position as a human rights defender, Elchin has participated in many successful court proceedings. He regularly publishes critical reports on the state of human rights, civil society, democracy and media freedom in Azerbaijan. In addition, he published a newspaper for NGOs to access alternative sources of information. He provides them with legal support and ensures their access to donor organisations. Elchin was held as a political prisoner from 2020-2023 and was one of the 16 political prisoners named in the US State Department's worldwide "Without Just Cause" campaign. He participated in the Elisabeth Selbert Initiative's support programme for human rights defenders, which brought him to Germany where he continues his activities.
